Google more popular in England than in the US

March 22, 2005

According to new data, search giant Google is more popular in the UK, accounting for a larger market share than its US counterpart.

The report, from Web monitoring firm Hitwise, found google.co.uk topping the list in the UK in terms of both market share of visits (48%) and volume of searches (63.7%).

The figures put Google UK ahead of its US parent, which Hitwise said represents 36.6% of all visits and 56.7% of all searches by US Internet users.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! UK & Ireland Search and MSN.co.uk Search benefited from their portal parents. For each, the portal parent is the top referring website (65% and 16% respectively), meaning that the largest source of visits comes from the portal.

However, Ask Jeeves UK held the strongest share for the lucrative Shopping and Classifieds category. According to Hitwise data, nearly a fifth (18%) of all visits to Ask Jeeves continue to shopping websites.

The industries that receive the largest percentage of visits from Search Engines & Directories are Computers & Internet, Shopping & Classifieds, Entertainment, Business & Finance, and Travel.

Google UK sends the highest percentage of visits to each of these industries, while MSN and Wanadoo Search send a slightly larger proportion of their visits than average to websites in the Travel industry (11%).

The most popular website search term was “ebay”, followed by “easyjet” and “amazon”, according to Hitwise.

The data revealed further insights into search user behaviour. When conducting a search, consumers are most likely to search on 2 words combined, which accounted for nearly a third (30.18%) of searches.
