Google wants to improve various functionalities of OpenOffice.org and at the same time, this demonstrates its excitement for new open source initiatives.

Google also wishes to reduce the memory requirements of OpenOffice and its rather large 80 Mb download file, in what could very well be the first step in the GoogleOffice.org project.

As proof of this, Google is now looking to hire some engineers to work on the project and is actively recruiting, more or less, for OpenOffice.org. Google’s projects like Summer of Code and the financing of other open-source projects have positioned Google as the OS friendly tech company, which is the opposite card that Microsoft is playing.

“We use a fair amount of open-source software at Google. We want to make sure that’s a healthy community. And we want to make sure open source preserves competitiveness within the industry,” Chris DiBona, Manager for Open-Source Programs at Google told ZDNet.

The Google - OpenOffice.org announcement is the first major development of the Google and Sun Microsystems partnership which was sealed earlier this month. Sun are the developers of StarOffice, the technological father of the OpenOffice.org application.
