Meet a new search engine: Seekport

Seekport expands into the UK and now offers an alternative to US-based search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Seekport, which already runs operations in France and Germany, claims to be the only search engine to support its technology with local index teams in each country.

The four-strong UK team will filter spam from searches and add relevant, country and market-specific content to produce customised UK results.

Seekport Internet Technologies� managing director Joachim Kreibich said: �We can remove material from our index within half an hour of receiving a request.

For European users this is a key issue, particularly as deletion requests from US search vendors typically have to be routed back through the US and it can take weeks for anything to happen.�

The firm said its own research in Germany indicated that six out of ten Internet users are fed up of �info-junk� in their search results. In contrast with US engines offering UK-specific searches, where every third search return is a US-sourced item, Seekport�s UK-based index team will work to cut this ratio down to an initial one-in-ten target.

In addition, Seekport is also developing a vertical search capability for core market areas, which will shortly be launched in the UK.

Seekport�s new UK company will be based in London. Its German site, www.seekport.de, has been live since June 2004, and the company said it is now one of Espotting�s largest German partners.

A French beta site, www.seekport.fr, was launched in France in October 2004. Seekport plans further roll-outs across Europe during 2005 in Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.
