And to end the week, in hoping to keep surfers from using rival search engines, Google on Friday added a new feature to its regular toolbar that lets users search the Internet by typing in simple words, not Web addresses.

The concept isn't new, since in 1997 (before Google's foundation) a company called Real Names developed a similar technology. Using Browse by Name, users can type "adobe reader" into Internet Explorer's address bar.

They would then end up at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html, a much harder address to remember for most people.

If the toolbar doesn't recognize the word(s), it does a standard Google search and displays the results.

Typing “toyota pickups,” for instance, brings up a typical hit list of sites.
